A setback for quantum cryptography?

Or not?  I was reading my physics magazine (yes, I am a nerd) and read an article about how – quite contrary to what people thought could happen, it turns out that someone has been able to intercept a quantum communication.  The bad part is that it’s a really big setback for quantum cryptography.  That matters (to me) because quantum communications are one of the most significant benefits from quantum information systems – which are an important part of the future of communications and a driver for quantum computers.

Here’s the plus side – it seems (to me) that anytime somebody hacks anything – the anything gets better.  People hack Windows – system gets better (some might debate that).  People hack devices – devices get better.  Quantum computers and the related elements probably aren’t as exciting as figuring out how to build a bot to mine gold in World of Warcraft, but it helps get things moving.  Here’s the article by Edwin Cartlidge that appeared in PhysicsWorld so you can decide for yourself.
